Let’s face it: Coffee isn’t that great for us, and yet many of us rely on it to get through the work day. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative to stay alert at work from morning to evening, we’ve got some ideas for you.

1. Wake up with a Cold Shower

morning - cold shower

There’s nothing like a cold shower to jolt you awake in the morning. Speed up circulation and get your body going for the day ahead.

2. Workout

Cold showers not your thing? An early morning workout boosts your energy by releasing endorphins and helps to start your day off on a positive note. If you work in higher education, the student rec center might allow administrators to share the space.

3. Hydrate

water - hydration, health, coffee alternative

Did you know that the symptoms of dehydration are like those of caffeine withdrawal? These include difficulty concentrating, headache, fatigue, and moodiness. The next time you’re reaching for another cup of coffee, try water instead.

4. Drink Tea

Tea provides a gentler caffeine boost than coffee, plus additional health benefits. Green tea contains antioxidants and herbal teas can help reduce stress.

5. Choose Healthy Snacks

healthy snacks - fruit, nuts, yogurt

When you’re feeling that mid-afternoon slump, opt for energy-boosting snacks rather than that third cup of coffee. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Raw almonds
  • Plain yogurt
  • Veggie sticks and hummus
  • Oatmeal
  • Chopped fruit or berries

6. Change Your Scenery

A walk around the can provide the energy you need to finish the day. You could even suggest holding one-on-one meetings in a different area of the office to help keep your mind engaged. Do you run a small business or startup? Work from a new place to see how that improves your energy.

7. Stick to a Routine

Follow a few morning and evening rituals to get you in the mindset for a great day ahead or a restful night’s sleep. No matter what industry you work in, a daily routine is critical to productivity and success.
