Picking Healthy Snacks at Work— String Cheese, Anyone?

March 09, 2016

Everyone has been there: it’s 3 p.m., and you’re dragging. You need a boost, and the only choices you have for a pick-me-up are what’s in the vending machine or the leftover Easter candy brought in by your coworker. Sure, a sugar rush will tide you over for a good 30 minutes, but you’ll crash again in no time.

A healthy snack, however, can provide hours of sustained energy in the short term and healthier, happier, and more productive employees in the long term. According to Health magazine, the ideal midday snack is roughly 100 calories and includes 15 grams of carbohydrates. Your snack may be small (a serving size should fit in the palm of your hand), but should pack enough of a punch to keep you full for a few hours.

In honor of National Nutrition Month, here are some of the healthy snacks we’ve seen around the Pacific Office Automation office:

  • Raw almonds
  • Hardboiled eggs
  • Fat-free, plain yogurt
  • String cheese
  • Veggie sticks and hummus
  • Vegan jerky
  • Dark chocolate (in small portions)
  • Unsalted sunflower seeds
  • Low-fat cottage cheese
  • Frozen bananas
  • Edamame
  • Crispbread with sliced meat
  • Oatmeal with a bit of peanut butter

For employers, revamping your vending machine and break room offerings might just improve employee health and corporate culture. Some studies suggest that companies that invest in health and wellness initiatives see a return on their investment through lower insurance premiums, fewer employee absences and more loyal, productive employees. For example, one Harvard study found that said initiatives provided a nearly three-to-one return on investment.

You don’t need to spend millions in order to reap the benefits, however. Even taking small steps, such as removing the candy jar from the lunch room, can have a big effect. Instead of ordering a bagel tray for your weekly brainstorming session, why not go to the local farmers market and bring in cartons of fresh berries?

Investing in your employees’ health is smart business. At Pacific Office Automation, our goal is to help our clients perform at their best by optimizing workflow processes. Contact us today for a free workflow analysis.
