October may be Cyber Security Month, but the truth is every month is Cyber Month. Threats evolve daily and staying secure means staying proactive. These five takeaways came from customer conversations, our team’s field work, and research we follow at POA.
1. Attacks are relentless…
Organizations now face an average of 1,984 cyberattacks per week, up nearly 150% since 2021. Even more telling, 51% of security alerts occur outside business hours attackers know when your team is thin. The practical response: 24/7 monitoring, tested escalation runbooks, and clear RTO/RPO expectations so after-hours events don’t become all-hands incidents. (World Economic Forum, 2025 & Arctic Wolf, 2025)
2. Small businesses are prime targets…
46% of all breaches hit companies under 1,000 employees. Why? Limited staff, legacy tooling, and flat networks make SMBs attractive to threat actors. Defense that works; managed EDR + email security, least-privilege access, and vendor risk checks because your partners’ weaknesses can become your breach path. (StrongDM, 2025)
3. AI tools create new risk…
43% of employees admit pasting company data into public AI tools—often financials or client info. Treat this like any other data exfiltration vector: set an AI-use policy, enable DLP and logging, and route sensitive work to approved, governed AI environments with access controls and retention guardrails. (Tenable, 2025)
4. Basic defenses still work…
The “Core 4”—strong passwords, MFA, timely updates, and reporting phishing—stop a surprising number of attacks. Level it up with phishing simulations, automated patch SLAs, conditional access, and hardware security keys for high-risk roles. Foundations done well beat fancy tools done poorly. (StaySafeOnline.org, 2025)
5. Cybersecurity is everyone’s job…
Tools are necessary; outcomes come from people and process. Build a culture of fast reporting, practice incident response, and measure time-to-detect and time-to-contain like you measure revenue KPIs. Security that’s embedded in daily operations is security that scales. Learn more about POA’s cybersecurity solutions and partners here.
