In 2020, workers around the country have left the office for a work-from-home situation due to the ever-changing and challenging circumstances brought on by the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
We didn’t expect this at the beginning of the year, but here we are and now our homes are also our office spaces. So to keep things a little more organized, compartmentalized, and sane, we’ve put together a short list of ways you can optimize your workspace for a more productive work day.
Be mindful of your surroundings when building a comfortable workspace. Your innate senses can play a part in making your space feel welcoming. Pay attention to the lighting in the room, as well as what type of air flow is available. Is the temperature ideal? You can even go so far as to ask yourself, “Does this room smell comfortable?” Scents are subjective, so find a candle or incense that fits your needs.
It may sound like a given, but having a desk that has the food and drink essentials is highly important. I don’t know if you’ve tried to work on an empty stomach or when you’re dehydrated, but it’s the worst and can lead to distraction and procrastination, two things that hamper a productive day.
A helpful workspace should have two helpful items: a place to quickly write down notes and ideas that pop into your mind and then a place to store those ideas. The former is considered idea storage and post-it notes, notebooks, and journals will help with that. Let’s say you’re working on one project but think of something related to another; having a note taking solution at arms length is both handy and efficient. Then, of course, you should have physical storage for all your desk’s knick-knacks so that at the end of each work day, cleaning up and organizing the day's work is done quickly and with ease of mind.
