How to Have a Healthy Work-Life Balance

It might sound like a corporate culture buzzword, but work-life balance is key to overall wellness. Whether you’re fresh out of college in your first job or a seasoned professional well into your career, the following tips can help you promote your physical and mental well-being amidst a busy schedule.

Combat Procrastination

In any job, stress and challenges at work are inevitable, but how you choose to manage these can influence your well-being. While some people are savvy enough to complete projects at the last minute, for many of us, procrastination creates unnecessary stress down the road. Instead of putting projects off until the last minute, break them down into manageable chunks that you can take on day-by-day.

Writing down what needs to be done and checking items off a list is a great way to manage your personal workflow and counteract work related stress. Setting small, manageable goals is often an easier way to visualize and tackle large projects.

Exercise Regularly

We can all agree that exercise is a great stress-reliever. Whether it’s a run or just a few minutes of stretching and meditation, the mood-boosting endorphins you create can help clear the mind, combat stress, and give you the motivation you need to complete another project.

Start small by taking a few minutes each day to practice deep breathing exercises. Or, grab a co-worker and take a walk during lunch to get some fresh air and refresh your mind for the afternoon. Although not drastic lifestyle changes, these small steps can help you take larger steps toward overall physical well-being, leading to improved performance at work.

Build a Support Network

Just as printers require technical support to work properly, people also need support to manage stress and find balance between work and life. If you don’t have one already, seek a mentor at work. Chances are, these contacts have already been in your shoes. When chosen properly, mentors can not only help you navigate through your career, but can also share advice for a healthy work-life balance.

Additionally, taking time to see family and friends outside of work can help improve your overall well-being. Spending time with loved ones can boost your mood and provide a welcome change from a day-to-day routine, helping to create a sense of balance with your career.

Unplug

In our connected world, taking time to unplug from electronics each day is essential, but many people don’t do it enough. Not only will this provide a break for your eyes, but it can also offer some much-needed peace and quiet, giving you time to refresh your mind.

Living in the moment by unplugging for even just a few minutes each day can drastically improve your work-life balance. Without the interruptions of social media and bombarding messages, you can reduce stress, feel a sense of control over your life, and find more quality time with loved ones.
