Here’s How You Can Keep Company Passwords Safe & Secure

May 03, 2018

While many companies have policies in place for periodic password changes, this alone isn’t enough to protect information from a data breach. Here are some additional do’s and don’ts to help keep your sensitive passwords secure.

Do: Use a Password Manager

Password managers offer simple, encrypted password storage for various websites and accounts in one central location. Whether you can count your online accounts on one hand or keep them saved on hundreds of bookmarks, it’s important that passwords vary in characters but not in strength. A password manager makes this effortless.

Some of our top picks include:

  • Dashlane
  • Keeper
  • LogMeOnce
  • Sticky Password Premium

Rather than writing down passwords on Post-It’s and notebooks with questionable security, each one will be safe and secure in your password vault.

Don’t: Overlook Password Creation Criteria

If you don’t have it already, your company should set up specific criteria that every employee needs to follow when creating or updating passwords. That way, the IT department can have more assurance that passwords won’t be easily broken.

Requirements can include:

  • High character count
  • Special characters
  • Non-repeating passwords
  • Random & complex passwords

Do: Take advantage of Two-Step Verification

Many sites have added a two-step verification process to log in to an account. This will require the user to attach a phone number to an account so that upon login, the site will prompt the user to input a code sent to that number.

By adding a second step, hackers won’t be able to access accounts without access to the attached phone number, adding an extra layer of protection.

Do: Consider a Comprehensive Data Security System

Password protection is a great first step, but keeping company information safe on all fronts might require a more robust solution. Most importantly, companies need to be proactive to prevent problems before they have a chance to begin.
