While our formal education takes place within a university system, some of the most important learning comes from on-the-job tasks or lessons in daily life. To be successful, it’s crucial to always continue learning. If you prefer to study on your own, dig through the internet or read a book. If you would rather learn socially, strike up a conversation with a coworker. Ask questions and always be curious - the more you know, the more confident you’ll become.
When you’re learning you’ll make mistakes, and that’s okay. Rather than focusing on what you did wrong, ask for feedback to shed some light. Maybe you had great ideas, but just a couple of the final details were off - easy fix. Even on the things you did well, ask for more feedback to see how you can improve in the future.
This doesn’t necessarily mean putting on your best business suit and preparing your elevator pitch for an organized happy hour - those events can be beneficial, but they aren’t the only means. Grow your network by saying hi to someone in the hallway, and then sitting with them at lunch. Some of the most organic conversations are the most meaningful ones, and you’ll get a major confidence boost from having a variety of people by your side.
This is a textbook rule that shouldn’t be overlooked. Many companies are adopting casual dress codes, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, when it comes to increasing your confidence, the golden rule is that when you look good, you feel good. Even if you’re wearing a nice casual outfit as opposed to athletic wear, there’s a good chance you’ll mentally feel better and more inclined to connect with new people.
Confidence stems from a positive space, so celebrate the things you’re doing well. If you just finished a big project or landed a top client, take a moment to recognize that! Whenever you need a pick-me-up, remember where you started. Even if you’re new to your career, you’ve done a lot of things right and made a lot of great choices to get where you are now - don’t forget those.
