6 Smart Questions Candidates Should Ask in a Job Interview

May 01, 2017

A job interview can be a nerve-wracking process, but it’s important to remember that the meeting is a two-way street. You should want to learn as much about potential employers as they want to learn about you. An interview is all about finding the right fit that will lead to success on the job.

We’ve compiled six questions we often hear from candidates in job interviews that make them stand out and explain why these types of questions are impressive to potential employers.

Interview Questions

To get a full picture of the company and how you might fit in, it’s helpful to prepare questions about the company itself, the job, and the person interviewing you. Try variations on the following questions in your next interview:

Company

  • How do you see this company growing and evolving in the coming years?
  • Do you offer opportunities for continuing education?

These questions show that you’re interested in a long-term career at the company. Answers can help provide a preview of your path as an employee of this company and how you’d be a part of its growth. While office perks are attractive, a job is most rewarding when it comes with room for growth and opportunities to help the company succeed.

Job

  • How can I be successful in this position?
  • What does a typical day look like for someone in this position?

As a new employee, you’ll have a learning curve and nervous jitters, but these questions can help ease the uncertainty about starting a new position. If answered honestly, they give great insight into what your job will look like.

Interviewer

  • What are your favorite and/or least favorite parts about working here?
  • How long have you worked here?

Candid answers from the manager interviewing you can give different perspective than someone in HR. It’s important to understand the experiences of someone who’s been there for some time because you could move into their shoes after a few years at the company.

These six questions are just a few of many that could be helpful in a job interview. What’s more, asking questions will show the interviewer that you care about the position and want to do a good job if you’re hired.
