4 Tips for Becoming a Successful Salesperson

If you’re a born salesperson, you likely have that winning combination of attitude, personality and work habits that make people want to buy what you're selling. Since we’re doing a fair amount of hiring these days, we thought this would be a good opportunity to showcase exactly what we’re looking for in our new salespeople. Do you have what it takes?

1. Practice empathy. Good salespeople listen to their customers and respond appropriately. Not everyone has the same personality or perspective as you, but if you can understand where someone is coming from, you can establish a rapport and instill trust. This helps build lasting relationships that lead to repeat business and referrals.

2. Be a goal-setter. Salespeople must be self-motivated. This doesn't mean doing absolutely anything to "get the sale." But it does mean setting goals, staying organized and following through.

3. Be a fixer, not a finger-pointer. When faced with a problem, a good salesperson will take action to remedy a situation. Don't offer someone or something to blame; offer a solution. Unhappy customers may spew criticism your way, but do not take it personally. Accept responsibility, express empathy and find out how you can fix things. One way to avoid upsetting your customers is to under-promise and over-deliver.

4. Be resilient. Sales is hard work and rejection is just part of the business. Successful salespeople overcome objections and look for ways to improve their approach. People who take failure personally and allow it to affect their work will not make it far in sales.
