Mornings can be harried, disorganized and full of distractions, but they don’t have to get the best of you. Because mornings set the tone for how we feel and how much we accomplish over the course of the day, creating a good morning routine is essential for feeling good throughout the day. Scientists agree that mornings offer peak productivity for most people. In order to capitalize on your morning time, here are 4 steps to becoming a more productive morning person:

1. Go to bed earlier. Studies show that too little sleep wreaks havoc on our health, moods and brain function. While it may be tempting to stay up later to clean or go through emails, you’re more likely to waste evening hours on unnecessary and mindless tasks. If you go to bed earlier, you can wake up feeling rested and ready for the day.

2. Exercise in the morning, preferably outside. Even just a little exercise can wake up your brain and body and give you increased energy throughout the day. If you simply can’t wake up early enough for a sunrise workout, don’t sweat it. Natural light also helps your brain naturally wake up and feel energized, so consider taking your breakfast out on the patio and soak in some rays before tackling the day.

3. Create a to-do list the night before, and prepare accordingly. Set out everything you’ll need the night before. Running around the house in the morning looking for your child's permission slip, your laptop charger, or the report you need to turn in sets you up for stress.

4. Prioritize your tasks. If you ask busy CEOs the key to being more productive at work, most will tell you they come up with three to five critical tasks and block out time to accomplish those things first. Try your best to wait to answer email, phone calls or get on social media until lunchtime. Once you let the distractions creep in, the day can get away from you.
