Health professionals contend that sitting all day long — even if you exercise regularly — can lead to a number of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes and a shortened life. That's bad news for office workers, who spend a good chunk of time sitting at their desks. Many are turning to standing desks to combat sedentary office life. Before you jump up out of your chair, here are a few things you should know about standing desks:
1. Standing all day comes with its own host of problems if done incorrectly, so make sure your standing desk is ergonomically correct. You should set your computer monitor at eye level and directly in front of you, standing with your arms at a 90-degree angle and wrists in a neutral position.
2. Make sure you still move around. Experts say that shifting your weight from leg to leg is a good way to stay moving, just make sure you don’t lock your knees. Taking sitting breaks help prevent stiffness and sciatica. Investing in a desk that adjusts up and down is the best option for easily alternating between sitting and standing.
3. Standing for long periods can cause pain in the lower legs and feet. Extra cushioning helps, so invest in a mat or pad for under your feet. High heels also put extra pressure on your feet, so avoid wearing them if you plan on standing the entire day, or invest in a make with a thicker heel.
With standing desks running from around $400 to upwards of $1,500, they are a significant investment for larger companies. However, healthier employees could reduce insurance premiums, and happier employees are more likely to be productive.
