Summertime is the season for office parties. From Labor Day celebrations to company picnics, the summer months offer a number of situations when professional and social worlds collide. Pacific Office Automation has provided three tips to help you navigate the social summer season.
1. Don't drink too much. Human resources professionals unanimously agree consuming too much alcohol is the worst behavior at an office party. Overindulging can lead to a number of inappropriate situations that can tarnish your work reputation. Some people rely on alcohol to ease any social awkwardness they are feeling. Others may see office parties as a chance to drink on the company's dime. Stick to a maximum of three drinks, and then think about switching to water.
2. Tow the line between professional and social. Work parties require the delicate dance of being a social and reserved person. Just because you are in a social setting, you should not air your work grievances to your supervisor. At the same time, you should keep a professional tone with your interactions. Think before you speak about your financial problems, a bad date, or your children's potty training endeavors. Make sure you listen as much as you talk. Ask your colleagues about their family, hobbies, or background.
3. Stay a reasonable amount of time. If you duck out of an office party early, it could signal to your boss that you are not a team player. If you stay too long, you run the risk of drinking or talking too much. Socialize for a few hours, make the rounds, and then graciously excuse yourself by thanking the hosts.
