At some point in your career, you will encounter a person with whom you find it is difficult to work. The workplace is its own melting pot of personalities, backgrounds and working styles. The types of management styles you’ll encounter in the workplace can range from laid-back and casual to micromanaging and critical. But learning how to work well with different kind of managers and co-workers is the key to career advancement. Here are some of our tips on how to work well with others in the workplace:
Be trustworthy. Finish your work on time. Deliver on your promises, and keep an open line of communication. Cop to your mistakes, and offer solutions to problems.
Be communicative. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Your supervisor is more likely to think of you favorably if you admit you need assistance rather than find out your reports are late due to your needing help and not asking for it.
Be open-minded. Everyone has a different background that contributes to his or her unique perspective. Try to understand where another person is coming from first instead of going on the defensive when a conflict arises.
Be a beacon of positivity. People will be drawn to you and want to work with you if you have a positive attitude. Also, if you focus on the good parts of a person, you will find them easier to work with.
Let go of conflict. It is only natural that disagreements arise in the workplace. However, holding a grudge or letting negativity fester is bad for your reputation, relationships and productivity as a whole.
Ask for feedback. This gives you an idea of areas to improve upon, but it also gives you the opportunity to show your manager all of your hard work. It further develops a relationship based on respect, trust and dedication.
