Does any event inspire more anticipation, excitement, and apprehension than the holiday office party? From the top brass to the interns, the company holiday party offers plenty of potential for festive fun, but also comes with some serious risks. So why do we host these events year after year?

It’s a time-honored tradition and it offers employers the chance to show their appreciation and foster a positive work environment. Likewise, an office party gives higher-ups the opportunity to bond with their staff and celebrate their efforts.

In an ideal world, the holiday office party is one that employees enjoy, won’t break the bank and is free of any potential liabilities. Here are a few holiday party tips for party planners:

● First, pick a cool venue. Most employees would like to get out of the office. After all, it’s hard to relax too much when a stack of incomplete work is in your direct line of sight. If that’s not in your budget, make sure to add some special touches to make the in-house office party feel special, like bringing in a popular food cart or a live band.

● If your staff is less about spiked eggnog and crudité, hosting your event outside or incorporating a charitable aspect to your event might be a good idea.

For employers

Wherever you hold your office party, here are a few best practices for employers to keep in mind:

Have a plan for alcohol distribution. Alcohol and holiday parties go hand-in-hand. A dry party can be a bummer, but alcohol consumption can lead quickly to bad behavior, embarrassments and even liabilities. So how do you help create a fun but safe environment? Offer drink vouchers to attendees to prevent people from going overboard. It’s also a good idea to as the bartenders ahead of time to be careful about over-serving. Make sure that there are also plenty of nonalcoholic beverages and food. Prevent drunk driving (and possible lawsuits) by offering to pay for taxis.

Avoid religious themes, as to avoid offense to employees.

Take care with social media. You should have some type of company policy about what employees can post from company events. For example, you might make it a policy that employees cannot post photos with alcohol to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

For Employees

Most employees look forward to the holiday party all year long. However fun the function might be, it’s still best to follow some guidelines for professionalism. Here are some best practices for employees to keep in mind about attending the holiday office party:

Show up, even if you come for 30 minutes to an hour. Thank the party planners and say goodbye when you leave.

Know the theme and dress code. You don't want to be underdressed or overdressed.

Mingle with everyone, even people you don't know. Keep the conversation light; in other words, don't use the party to jockey for a promotion or close a sale. Instead, let your co-workers and their spouses talk about themselves, their interests, and their families.

Limit your drinking. Make a game plan for yourself before attending. Once the drinks start flowing, it can become too easy to get caught up in the moment. Eat some food beforehand, set a drink limit for yourself or drink water in between alcoholic beverages.

● Make sure to come to work the next day, even if you're feeling worse for wear.
